WAEC Beauty & Cosmetology 3 Areas of Concentration 2026/2027: Based on the WAEC syllabus and examination structure for 2026/2027, the Beauty and Cosmetology examination focuses on practical skills, theoretical knowledge, and safety standards. The core areas of concentration are typically organized into the following three main branches:

Hair Care and Treatment

Covers how to care for and style hair, including shampooing, conditioning, and treating different hair and scalp types. It also involves chemical treatments like relaxing and texturizing, as well as styling methods such as weaving, cutting, trimming, fixing wigs, and basic barbering with attention to hair diseases and safety.

Face and Body Care (Make-up and Skin Care)

Focuses on identifying skin types and treating common skin problems. It includes applying makeup (foundation, powder, lipstick, eye makeup), understanding colour combinations, and performing facial care like treating defects and grooming facial hair.

Safety, Hygiene, and Entrepreneurship

Emphasizes proper cleaning and sterilization of tools, maintaining personal and client safety, and identifying tools used in beauty care. It also covers salon management, including how to start and run a salon, basic laws, and advertising.

Important Notes for 2026/2027

The exam will be conducted in CBT format. Students should be ready for practical tasks such as scalp treatment, hair coloring, relaxing, and makeup. Beauty and cosmetology are compulsory trade subjects for all candidates.

Question 1 / Observation

Question 1

(a) Definition of terms such as Aesthetic, Barbering and pedicure. Majority of the candidates exhibited their ability as the question was well attempted e.g (i) Asethetics generally deals with beauty.

(ii) Barbering : this is the act of cutting; dressing; styling and shaving of hair while few candidates wrote that it is a person who babs;

(iii) some candidates define pedicure as legs are different from feet and toe nails instead of improving the appearance and care of feet and toe nails.

(b) requested for part of the human body associated with each of the areas listed in

(a)(i)Majority of the candidates answered the question correctly while some candidates answers were not serially arranged e.g feet, skin and hair instead of skin, hair and feet.

(c)(i) asked for how a set of clippers should be sterilized in a barbering salon. It was well attempted as majority answered the question correctly, this include ingredients, 70% alcohol and storage in sterilizing cabinet.

(c)(ii) Was on of chemicals used to sterilize tools in a salon. The question was not well answered by the candidates, they listed kerosene, fuel, and soap as chemical instead of alcohol, methylated spirit e.t.c

(d)(i) required for items that can be found in a First Aid box and it was well answered except for spellings and use of trade names, some candidates lose marks

This (d)(ii) was on the use of each of the items listed in d(i) above and it was well attempted and answered correctly.

(e) Was on factors to be considered when setting up a beauty salon. Majority of the candidates answered it correctly e.g advertisement, creating awareness e.t.c.

Question 2 / Observation

(a)(i) This question on the procedure for treating dandruff was not answered correctly by candidates that attempted the question; they did not know that procedure for dandruff treatment is just draping, oiling the scalp by using infrared rays and indirect high-frequency current, etc.

The (ii) part of the question was well tackled by the candidates, e.g., dandruff, infected hair with lice and ringworm, which is conditions for special shampoos

Question (b), which was on reasons why wig measurement should be taken before purchase. A few candidates that attempted the question wrote only two points, e.g., size and fitting, while many candidates wrote only one point, which was size, instead of giving answers like “easy adjustment,” “comfort,” “have a desired length,” etc.

The (ii) part of the question was not well tackled as well. They failed to state ways of adjusting wig, e.g shrink with hot water, adjust the hook-line at the nape etc.

Question (c) was on basic steps in chemical relaxer. Most of the candidates who attempted this question did not perform well; candidates wrote on procedure of hair relaxer like drape, base application, wash and rinse the hair instead of processing, neutralizing and conditioning etc.

The (ii) part of the question which was on classes of chemical relaxers according to their strengths was answered correctly by the candidates.

Question 3 / Observation

a(i), which was on guidelines for buying shoes, was the candidate’s strength, as those who attempted this question scored high marks .Candidates were able to write more ideas e.g type and material for production, easy to wear, etc. Part (a)(ii) of the question was on reasons why a cosmetologist should wear low-heeled shoes. The candidates answered the question very well which was prevention of fall/injury, for easy movement and to offset fatigue.

(b)(i) Was on ways in which skin care products are commonly abused. Most of the candidates did not answered it correctly, candidates wrote that ingredients should be checked before purchase, seek a cosmetologist for recommendation and buying of expensive cream instead of mixing it with chemicals, not following the instruction of manufacture and wrong use of product. Question (ii) was on factors to consider when choosing skin product. Majority of the candidates that attempted the question answered it correctly.

question(c) was on procedure for giving a facial massage, it was not answered well by the candidates that attempted the question. They were expected to state that clients should be prepared, drape body/head of a client; analyzes skin and clean the skin e
