WAEC Physics Areas of Concentration 2026/2027
WAEC Physics Areas of Concentration 2026/2027: The WAEC Physics examination focuses heavily on mechanics (motion, forces, energy, simple machines), electricity & magnetism (circuits, fields), waves & optics (sound, light, refraction), heat energy, and modern physics. Practical experiments (e.g., pendulums, Ohm’s law) are crucial for the practical paper.
Physics demands precision. Many students leave the WAEC exam confident, only to end up with a D7—often due to poor formatting. Missing units (e.g., writing “150” instead of “150 J”), not defining symbols in formulas, or failing to convert units (like cm to m) can cost crucial marks, /ncg]

Concepts of Matter
- Matter is made of tiny particles (atoms/molecules).
- States: Solid, Liquid, Gas.
- Evidence: Brownian motion.
- Kinetic theory of matter explains:
- States of matter
- Gas pressure
- Evaporation & boiling
- Cohesion, adhesion, capillarity
- Crystalline vs Amorphous substances compared.
2. Fundamental & Derived Quantities
- Fundamental: Length (m), Mass (kg), Time (s).
- Derived:
- Volume (m³)
- Density (kg/m³)
- Speed (m/s)
3. Position, Distance & Displacement
- Position: location using coordinates (X, Y, Z).
- Distance: total path covered.
- Displacement: shortest distance + direction.
- Tools: metre rule, vernier calipers, micrometer screw gauge.
- Direction measured using compass/protractor.
4. Mass vs Weight
- Mass: amount of matter (kg), measured with balance.
- Weight: force due to gravity (N), measured with spring balance.
5. Time
- Time = interval between events.
- Measured using clocks, stopwatch, pendulum, etc.
- Unit: second (s).
6. Fluids at Rest
- Concepts: density, pressure, relative density.
- Pressure depends on depth.
- Principles:
- Pascal’s principle
- Archimedes’ principle
- Law of flotation
- Applications: hydraulic press, ships, submarines, hydrometers.
- Instruments: barometer, manometer, pumps.
7. Motion
- Types: random, rectilinear, rotational, circular, oscillatory, etc.
- Includes relative motion.
- Causes: forces (contact & field forces).
- Friction: solid friction & viscosity (fluid friction).
- Basic idea of circular motion.
